VISIT TO FAWLEY REFINERY

Thu, May 10th 2018 at 1:30 pm -

Report by John Thomson (organiser):-

On 10 May a small but select band enjoyed a presentation and tour of the
Esso (strictly ExxonMobil) Refinery at Fawley, after having imbibed at a
local hostelry on the way.   The Fawley site was initially established
in 1923 and was greatly extended after WWII. It is the largest refining
and petrochemical plant in the UK, covering some five square miles,
processing 270,000 barrels of crude oil every day, and producing 20% of
the fuel used on our country's roads.   We were given a presentation of
the history and layout of the site, together with the myriad products
and by-products, and their manner of production, followed by a very
interesting coach tour of the Refinery.   The lasting memory of the
latter was miles and miles of steel piping, storage tanks, and (to the
layman) strange complex metal towers.    In summary, a fascinating visit
to a major contributor to the UK economy on our New Forest doorstep.
