Children's Tree of Joy Switch On (30 November 2017)

Thu, Nov 30th 2017 at 6:00 pm -

The start of the festive season.

Two new sponsors for the 2017 Rotary Tree of Joy

Guernsey Gas and PwC Channel Islands have joined Deutsche Bank as the sponsors for the Rotary Tree of Joy this year.

After many years with the same sponsors, the Rotary Club of Guernsey had to find two new sponsors, otherwise their Tree of Joy campaign, symbolised by the light tree on the Weighbridge Roundabout, was at risk of not happening.  Fortunately, when Guernsey Gas and PwC heard of their predicament, they each stepped forward to offer a sponsorship commitment and, in doing so, have joined long-standing sponsors Deutsche Bank.

The light tree, believed to be the tallest in Europe, if not the World, has become something of a local tradition as the festive season approaches.

The light tree, as well as the real trees in Church Square and at Guernsey Airport, highlights the Rotary Club’s Christmas present-giving campaign, which gives islanders the chance to purchase gifts for deserving children in the Bailiwick.

Andy Salisbury, Community Service Chairman of the Rotary Club of Guernsey, said: “We’d like to thank both Guernsey Gas and PwC for coming forward and supporting our Tree of Joy appeal.

“The Tree of Joy has become a Christmas tradition for islanders, who see it as marking the start of the festive season but, more importantly, it is a symbol of the Rotary gift tag initiative to provide Christmas presents to needy, well-deserving children in Guernsey.

“Huge thanks also must go to our sponsors and the people of Guernsey for their generosity and helping to ensure that our Christmas present-giving campaign continues to go from strength-to-strength.”

Steven Le Prevost, Director at PwC in Guernsey added: “We are genuinely delighted to play a part in supporting such a worthwhile initiative as the Tree of Joy and really look forward to helping make a difference in the lives of children here in our community, who might not otherwise receive much. After all, the festive season should be a magical time for everyone.”

The Tree of Joy will be illuminated on Thursday 30 November at 6.00 p.m. approx.

Over the years the Bank has developed a wide range of financial services products for retail and corporate clients, has established an experienced team of specialists and built strong relationships with our clients, industry professionals and the local community.

We support a wide range of cultural, educational and sporting activities in the islands not only through sponsorship but also through the commitment of our staff who have been engaged in a range of fundraising initiatives for many local charities.

Our engagement in the community focuses on four pillars, namely ‘Talent’, ‘Education’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Empowerment’. For each, we aspire to be a catalyst for change for good, applying our passion and determination to make a positive difference in our community. That’s why we focus on developing long-term relationships, so that we can make a lasting impact.

Here in Guernsey, we were genuinely thrilled to see the PwC name in lights last year when we won the ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ accolade at the Guernsey Community Foundation’s annual awards ceremony.

About Guernsey Gas

From humble beginnings powering the island’s street lights in the early 1800s, Guernsey Gas has gone on to heat homes, provide hot water and offer a comprehensive range of gas and electrical appliances through the Energy Centre in St Peter Port to the people of Guernsey.

Today gas is an abundant natural resource that is shipped into Guernsey then distributed around the island via Guernsey Gas’ network or delivered to mini-bulk tanks or via LPG bottles. Guernsey Gas is part of the International Energy Group (IEG) which also includes Jersey Gas and Manx Gas and has more than 40,000 customers connected to its networks. The group has invested £18.7m in the Channel Islands which incorporates a new gas making plant and upgraded storage facilities. It currently maintains 315 miles (506km) of mains network across the Islands and continues to develop its business with the greenest fossil fuel available, a testament to their commitment to growth. It has also recently acquired a licence to generate and supply electricity in Guernsey to offer the islanders a genuine and transparent alternative for the future

The company supports a number of local charitable initiatives including the Age Concern Bailiwick of Guernsey Fuel Fund which helps pensioners in the islands manage their heating costs.

Guernsey Gas is thrilled to be supporting the Tree of Joy for the first time and helping to raise awareness of the Rotary Club’s essential work in the island community.
