Welcome to the Rotary Club of Allander which is now in its 50th year. We meet on a Thursday evening at 6.15pm in The Burnbrae,Milngavie Road, Milngavie G61 3DQ. We are involved in various projects in the local Bearsden and Milngavie community eg a major partner in the Milngavie Youth Centre in Milngavie, assisting in the transport to and from Friendship Circle every Wednesday at Milngavie Town Hall, engaging with local Primary and Secondary schools. Each year in June you will come across us in Milngavie and at Bearsden Highland Games selling ducks for our Annual Duck Race which has raised funds for CHAS (Children's Hospice Association Scotland), Kidney Kids Scotland and other local charities. Rotary was founded in Chicago in 1905 by Paul Harris and in 2012 celebrated its centenary in Scotland.We are part of a worldwide family of Rotary clubs of which there are 33,000 in 200 countries and geographical areas, with a membership of 1.2 million.With this extensive organisation on the ground, collaboration can produce wonderful life changing results. There is no greater example of this than the story of the fight against Polio. Polio is a virus which can cause paralysis and death. In 1985 there were 350,000 cases in 125 countries. In 1998 Rotary International and the World Health Organisation embarked on a campaign to eradicate Polio.Rotary raised $250 million.The Bill and Melinda gates Foundation matched this sum.As a result of the immunisation project, Polio remains in only 4 countries: Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nigeria.Rotary set a new target: $200m. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has agreed to match this sum with a Challenge Grant of $350m. Teams of Rotarian volunteers are in these countries immunising children.It is reckoned by the time Polio has been eradicated , in terms of money, expertise, equipment and volunteers, Rotary International w8ill have contributed close on $2 billion. Rotary provide Shelter Boxes and Water Boxes which contain tents and other equipment to purify water and help survival in disasters.  Allander Rotary has, and continues to provide funds for these projects. Rotary provides an opportunity to make a difference..... locally, nationally and internationally.  Allander Rotary is looking for new members to continue the valuable service given by members over the past 50 years and which reflects the lifestyle of the present day.
