The Club’s inaugural Rotary Ride event was held on June 12th. Thankfully we were blessed with reasonable weather, the Rugby Club proved to be the perfect venue for hosting the event and we had a great turnout of around 50 riders for the main ride. Even a tandem! A number of supporting organisations helped create a great atmosphere for the parallel family cycle event held at the rugby ground, with John Yeomans coordinating the various activities and Bishop Auckland Hospital Radio doing a splendid job as MC.
To date, we’ve raised a net £1375 from the day, all proceeds going to Prostate Cancer UK. That figure is likely to be at least doubled by online sponsorship of individual riders, although currently this isn’t quantifiable as it is sent direct to the charity.
Thanks go to the Rugby Club, our co-organisers Bishop Auckland Cycle Club, GCS Medical, our splendid team of volunteer marshals and all event supporters, including Auckland Castle Trust, Durham Police, Inspiral Cycles, Halfords and Durham County Council. Thanks also to District President Terry Long for taking time to attend the event, even if he forgot his bike.
It was our cyclists, of course, of all shapes, ages and abilities, with some having travelled long distances to participate, who were the essence of the event. All seemed to thoroughly enjoy the day and are expecting a repeat next year! We’re working on it already.more Some pictures of our 100th year celebration
