Club Meeting at the Faenol Fawr

Update on Polio Plus & review by Councillor Gareth Davies

With only nine new cases reported so far this year, the world could look forward to celebrating the total eradication of the dreaded killer disease of polio within the next five years, members were told at their meeting at Faenol Fawr. Senior vice-president John Hickerton, who is also chairman of the club’s International Committee, said Rotary’s invaluable global contribution to this stunning achievement was often understated and sometimes simply ignored entirely. This was a complete travesty of its unstinting efforts, working alongside the astonishing generosity of the founder of the Microsoft Corporation Bill Gates and his wife, who matched every pound raised in support of the End Polio campaign, by donating two pounds themselves. “The final triumph of this phenomenal objective is now within sight and if Rotary does nothing else, this accomplishment alone will for ever justify its existence,” he added. President Keith Roberts announced that the club had once again purchased 20 kilos of crocus bulbs which would soon be planted on parts of Rhyl’s East Parade to beautify the promenade and asked members to help share in this task. The evening concluded with a comprehensive review by member Gareth Davies of his first six months experience of local government following his election to both Denbighshire County Council and Prestatyn Town Council in May. Detailing the numerous issues and processes entailed in his enjoyable multi-tasking roles, he said a number of important and exciting measures were under active consideration by both authorities, aimed at enhancing the quality of services and opportunities for the wider community, to which he was looking forward to contributing. The warm thanks of members were extended by the President.
