The Rotary Club of Porthcawl has 38 members and is actively involved in both community and charitable events and activities.
From a charity perspective, the Club currently collects around £9,000 per year from various events held in Porthcawl and this is donated to various local and international charities. The following local organisations have received donations in the past year: Ogwr District Talking Newspaper, Wallich, Home Start, Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, KPC Youth & Community, Ty Cornel and Ty Hafen. Donations have also been made to overseas projects including Doctor Bank, Tools for Africa, and Jaipur Limbs.
Thanks are extended to all those in Porthcawl who participate in our activities and those who contributed to the various collections undertaken.
Some of our activities are shown below:
Each year students from Atlantic College attend this evening and provide us with information on their individual country, language, customs and even songs. The International Night in 2017 will be held on 27th February in the Hi-Tide Inn, Porthcawl.
On four evenings in December 2016 the Club will took the float around parts of Porthcawl collecting money for the various Rotary charities. Three collections were also made in John Steet, Porthcawl. Thanks are extended to all those who contributed.
CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL
The festival was held in All Saints Church Porthcawl between 28th Nov and 5th December 2016. Over 60 local organisations provided and decorating Christmas trees. The trees provided a wonderful setting for the various services and concerts held during that week. Thanks to all the local organisations which participated in 2016. Proceeds were shared between the Rotary Charities and All Saints Chruch.
The Club also ran a Rotary post system for the CF36 area in December and delivered over 3,500 Christmas cards.
The combined effect of the Post, the Carolcade and the Christmas Tree festival resulted in over £5,000 being collected for local charities. Many thanks to who participated in the events and especially those who made financial donations.
However, Rotary is not solely about holding charitable events. Various social activities include a Fish and Chip supper (with a very 'friendly' quiz), Race Night and a Treasure Hunt.
Within the community, there are Sunday Services and Bingo & Singalong evenings in Residential Homes, and Know your Blood Pressure Day held one Saturday in April. The Club also runs youth competitions (Young Writer and Young Musician) and sponsors students to attend the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) course.
