Our club raises money and spends it where needed,
on behalf of our community.
With the exception of an annual donation to the Rotary Foundation charity, the disposition of all funds raised is decided solely by club members. Ad-hoc payments may be made in cases of hardship or need, in a variety of circumstances. We have supported the life saving charity Shelterbox for many years, but we are always open to consider new ideas for helping other causes.
This July, the islands' Rotary Club invited doctors from the St. Mary's Health Centre to join them at their dinner meeting in order to present them with a cheque to pay for specialist equipment to assist in Stroke Prevention here on Scilly. In thanking the club Dr John Garman said that the equipment purchased would greatly increase the medical team's ability to detect and predetermine critical conditions such as heart attack and stroke.
We make most of our income by the provision of services and activities which we hope will be useful or enjoyable and considered value for money in their own right. A number of generous individuals have made personal donations too, some through their own fund raising activities. You might see our collection boxes in strategic places at times of national or international disaster, many thousands of pounds have been raised like this.
