Welcome to the website of the Rotary Club of Burnham Beeches
About Burnham and Burnham Beeches
Burnham Beeches: North of the village is Burnham Beeches, one of the finest woodland tracts anywhere near London. It is the remains of a great primeval forest, famous for its pollarded beeches. It is also a fine example of early systamatic woodland management
The average age of the pollarded beeches is known to be in excess of 400 years. The Beeches have long been the rendezvous of artists, poets and country-lovers. Thomas Gray, Sheridan and Mendelssohn are known to have visited the forest frequently and been inspired by the 'Wild Woodland' and the character of the old trees.
Burnham: An ancient hamlet, mentioned in the Domesday Book, which lies within attractive countryside bounded by the nearby towns of Windsor, Maidenhead, and Beaconsfield. There are numerous 16th and 17th century buildings in and around the High Street and the local 13th century church has a tower which is believed to date from about 1200.
About our Club
The Club was chartered in April 1985, and has maintained a membership of between 30 and 40 ever since. Membership is drawn principally from Burnham and Farnham Common, and other local villages. We meet each week in a magnificently converted medieval barn situated in a beautiful part of Buckinghamshire.
The Club runs a busy programme of social events, many of which are open to non-members. These events have helped forge a strong sense of fellowship and goodwill between members, as well as with the community at large. A highlight each year is an exchange visit with our friends in the Rotary Club of Amberieu en Bugey , which is located about 30 miles east of Lyons, France.
The Club's fund-raising activities support local, national and international charitable causes. The main fund-raising event, held each year in May, is the Donkey Derby. Over the last few years, the Club has donated more than £50,000 to such causes as Marie Curie Cancer Care, the Thames Valley Hospice and the Thames Valley Adventure Playground, and many others. The Club places great emphasis on youth development, working closely with local schools sponsoring academic competitions, providing careers advice, and general support.
We are very proud of the fact that the Club was project leader on behalf of District 1090, in the construction of a new classroom block for a tsnami ravished school in Sri Lanka. This involved Club members travelling to the site at their own expense. This example has been followed by other Club members who have separately visited Africa in support the 'Send a Cow' charity and 'Africa Micro-credit'.
